This is true for a majority of people. Your two-party system is basically to blame because each side goes out of its way to make the other side seem like they are all extremists while most people land a little bit left or right of center. I remember my ex did her psychology undergrad study on this concept but it’s basically just polarization. It’ll probably never ever happen, but the US needs some more political parties. For a supposed leader of democracy, it’s basically the bare minimum to have two major political parties to be considered. Isolation from everyone else and spending time on certain message boards with like-minded outcasts can cause people to spiral into some pretty shitty attitudes. Twitter is on a whole other level for me with the comments on anything. Reddit is awful but at least there is supposed to be moderation. Even Youtube comments of early 2010s were less toxic than Twitter is now.
